Cybersecurity Tips for the Everyday User

When it comes to staying safe online, we all need to be mindful of our cybersecurity. Here are some practical tips that can help you protect yourself in the digital world without the jargon:

    • Use Strong and Unique Passwords: Make sure your passwords are not easily guessable and use different passwords for each of your accounts.  I know this can be hard. So at the very minimum have a different password for your email account.  This is so that if someone hacks a different account of yours you will be able to do a password reset without the hacker also being in your email to stop you.

    • Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling two-factor authentication wherever possible. This will help stop hackers in their tracks even if they have your password.

    • Be Cautious of Phishing Attempts: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing personal information to unknown sources.

    • Keep Your Software Updated: Regularly update your operating system, antivirus software, and other applications to patch any security vulnerabilities.

    • Secure Your Home Network: Change the default password on your router and use encryption to secure your Wi-Fi network.

    • Limit the Information You Share: Be mindful of the information you share online, especially on social media platforms.

    • Backup Your Data: Regularly backup your important files and data to an external hard drive or cloud storage.

By following these simple cybersecurity tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to online threats and protect your personal information. Remember, staying safe online is a shared responsibility, and taking proactive measures can go a long way in safeguarding your digital life.
